CS3 crash to bluescreen while scrubbing + QT from mac problems
by Steve Whiteley on Feb 7, 2008 at 2:16:05 pm

Hi there,

Ok, 2 problems here:

1. I seem to be having nasty bluescreen crashes with CS3. I have had them with v7 too, but much less frequent. This occurs when scrubbing and is not dependant on using just one file type. The error given on the bluscreen is 'error in non page filed memory' or similar.

2. so, have been staying in v7 on problem projects. One such I am doing now. The rushes have been sucked in on a MAC as 10 bit uncompressed QTs. They will not play in QT on my workstation - QT tries to access the web to look for a codec. They will play fine in CS3 (apart from the crashes above that is!) but show up as white in v7! Puzzling.

Any ideas on either of these much appreciated, as deadlines loom!

I am running on:

Dual Opteron, Supermicro H8DCE, 8Gb ram, system disc is Seagate Barracuda 300Gb SATA, files usually play off my raid (2 SCSIs striped as 140GB array)

[Steve Whiteley] "The error given on the bluscreen is 'error in non page filed memory' or similar."

This could be caused by a bad RAM DIMM, or a problem with your page files (do you have much system disk space left?), or maybe a problem with your Memory & Cache settings. If it's happening consistently then I would recommend that you start yanking DIMMS out of your system and testing. Process of elimination to find the culprit.

Are you rendering out to 10-bit Uncompressed or are the files you render being transcoded to that codec on the Mac? It sounds like it may be an issue of a codec not existing on your Windows machine.

Hi Darby,

Thanks for the suggestions.

I did assumke it was a RAM/page file issue and have tried taking chips out. I had a system meltdown recently which turned out to be a faulty motherboard, so had that replaced. but this bluescreen crash still occurs after that. Settings for memory and cache are identical between v7 and CS3. I'm trying to get on with this ad for now and for the last few hours it's been behaving, so fingers crossed! But a serious issue that needs resolving by more testing when not so busy!

On the QT issues. I'm now working successfully in CS3, so is ok for now, but I'd like to get to the bottom of it. The grabbing was done elsewhere. They are 10 bit uncompressed and yes, I shall be rendering to that in the end for return to the facility for playout to digi. It's just weird that v7 doesn't know what they are but CS3 does if it's a missing codec issue.
