Still Missing Codecs
I tried the QT 7.4.1 update on a mac power pc laptop (10.4.11) I use for testing, it rendered fine in about 30 minutes. No problem. However the choices of codecs are still limited. I won't be updating my Mac Pro until I find out why.
Missing codecs:
BMP
Cinepak
Component Video
Graphics
H.261
H.263
Motion JPEG A
Motion JPEG B
Planar RGB
Sorenson Video
Sorenson Video3
TGA
TIFF

Have you tried going into System Preferences -> QuickTime -> Advanced and checking the box marked "Show legacy encoders"?

I'm going to say the same thing I said on the Final Cut Pro forum.
If you're brave enough to do it, may I suggest you do this FIRST:
Check to see PRECISELY what has changed in the QT update. Specifically, have they added any new codecs? Have they made improvements to how QT works with Flash? You know, anything you as a multimedia provider can actually USE?
If all they've done is to make security improvements so you can download movies from iTunes, you have to ask yourself how desparately you actually need to do that. My guess is you don't, so you shouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole.

They weren't very specific about what they did in the update text, basically it said "improved security and improved compatibility with 3rd party applications" (my emphasis).
That, combined with the report of 7.4.1 playing nice with AE, combined with my renders not failing after installing it leads me to believe that it is a worthwhile update... Of course, I haven't done any 3 hour renders yet (just a couple 20 minute ones).

I'm glad you haven't had any problems, Darby. But one thing still bothers me:
[Darby Edelen]"They weren't very specific about what they did in the update text, basically it said "improved security and improved compatibility with 3rd party applications" (my emphasis)."
Yes, AE's a thrid party application, but QT 7.4 was ALSO giving fits to the users of the Final Cut Pro family of software. I find it interesting -- not to mention a little bit spooky -- how Apple refers to Final Cut Suite as "3rd party applications."
If you discover anything in the new QT that improves your life, please let us know. Until then, I ain't trusting much that's new from His Jobsness and the boys and girls in Cupertino.

Were you able to do the things you needed to do with QT 7.3? I bet you were.
Then why would you want to take the chance that Apple fixed every last blessed thing in QT 7.4.1 -- EVERY third-party bit of software now works -- with no assurance that you will get any increased capabilities whatsoever? Apple's recent track record on this matter is spotty at best.
But hey, if you want to be on the bleeding edge, fine. I'll wait until I read reports that a new version of QT gives MY system -- the system on which I rely for a paycheck -- improved functionality in the things I do.
I could care less that I can't rent movies on iTunes. I can still make the TV spots I need to make. Screw 'em.

I had the same rendering problem with QT 7.4 as described above. I installed QT 7.4.1 and now the problem seems to be fixed!!! I've rendered a couple of projects so far and haven't had any more trouble.

I don't generally resurrect old threads, but where in the heck is this "show legacy codecs" I've seen mentioned here & elsewhere, for us PC users? It's no where in QT's preference/advance menu.
I have a client that is requesting a preview file with the Sorenson 3 codec and haven't used it in so long... & just realized it's gone poof along with all the others mentioned earlier in this thread. If there's a remedy, I'd like to know about it. I'd also like to know the genius at Apple who decided this & why :-
