On the Final Cut Pro forum -- as you might expect -- there has been considerable consternation about QT 7.4. But Walter Biscardi, one of the FCP forum's hosts, has the right idea: quit bellyachin' about QT 7.4 and get on with life! So in the spirit of his opinion, let's have some fun with the new QT!
It occurred to me that a PC company could have an absolute field day with QT 7.4. They could make a commercial like the Mac-PC spots: "Hello, I'm a Mac... I'm a PC"... you know the ones. So here's my TV commercial spoof of the situation:
(MAC and PC stand screen right on a white background. PC tries to revive MAC, who is frozen in mid-action. An attractive female FAIRY drops into the scene screen left on a very-visible wire.)
PC: C'mon Mac, snap out of it!
FAIRY: Welcome to Quicktime seven-point-four, PC!
PC: Hi, Mac and I just upgraded our Quicktimes.
FAIRY: Yes! Now you can rent movies on iTunes! Isn't it wonderful?
PC: Not really! When Mac ran Apple's own Final Cut Pro, he just stopped!
FAIRY: Uh-huh....
PC: What? You mean the new Quicktime won't work with all of Mac's programs?
FAIRY: No, it won't... but now he can rent movies on iTunes! Isn't it wonderful?
PC: Poor Mac. Crippled by his own software.
(Dissolve to an Apple Cinema Display over a white background, displaying a Quicktime logo. LOWER-THIRD SUPER: "Works right on PC's.")
Mind you, I don't take sides in the ongoing Windows-Mac debate. But say you were in Windows-land -- could you resist NOT having a little fun at QT 7.4's expense?

Does it actually work correctly on PCs, or is it just that there aren't as many programs that make such extensive use of QT as FCP on PCs? The QT/AE bug is still a problem on PCs, yes?

[Ron Lindeboom]"...Apple service centers do not do service work on PCs and so there is nothing to be gained by making the PC version carry the same issue.
At least that's Bob Zelin's take..."
Wow! I was beginning to think that Apple cared more about money than customers, but Bob takes it to the extreme!

I see that quite a few people are having trouble with QT 7.4. My computers were accidentally upgraded, yes I know *accidentally* I inadvertently hit the upgrade button. So I ran FCP 5.14 and have experienced no problems. I also re-rendered a 12 min AE 7.0 project to see if there were any problems and none...So are only some systems experiencing problems. Im still using OS X.4.11 so not leopard and Im using Powerpc, my G4 powerbook and my DP G5 2.5gz

Consider yourself lucky.
From now on, I think all Apple users should avoid upgrading to a newer quicktime version unless specifically instructed to do so. Apple's PROPOGANDA (and that's what it is, make no mistake) would make one believe that QT can be all things to all people, which is clearly not so.
By the way: I'm on a MacPro running Leopard with AE8. I'm not a PC guy. I'm just not of the mindset that Apple is the gentle, benign, duckies-and-bunnies computer maker and Microsoft is The Evil Empire. They're BOTH out to remove money from your pocket, and the ONLY reason they care about customers is that happy customers tend to keep sales up.
So why doesn't Apple admit its mistake with QT 7.4? Because there are a LOT more people who have iPods and run iTunes than there are people who run AE and FCP. So for the overwhelming majority of Apple's customer base, QT 7.4 is just fine.
