1080i suequence to SD
by Todd Morgan (morgancreative) on Jan 24, 2008 at 6:19:32 pm

Hi,

I am working on a sequence in 1080i using files rendered out of Max and brought into AE. Client needs SD version. Can I use these 1080i files in a 720x486 comp?

Thanks!

How 'bout this:

• Make a 720x486 AE comp. Use AE's D1 NTSC comp preset.
• To this comp, add your 1080 AE comp. AE takes care of the pixel aspect ratio differences of the new layer. It's handy like that.
• Scale the layer so it fits top-to-bottom. The command is in Layer>Transform>Scale, and there's a keyboard shortcut for it, but I haven't memorized it.
• You now have a 4x3 center punch of your 1080 comp. If you need to do a little Pan & Scan work, you can animate the layer's horizontal position.

the only thing i would add, would be make sure ae has correctly separated fields for the 1080i footage before before rendering.

to do this, simply select the footage in the project window and choose file>interpret footage>main... make sure that ae is set to separate fields. if it's not, then choose the correct field order (upper or lower).

if you are unsure of the filed order, pick one, then close the settings window and option/alt double click the footage in the project window and use the page up/down keys to advance thru the footage. if it looks good then you have the right settings, if it looks odd, then you need to change the settings. you may also want to check the 'preserve edges' option in the interpret footage settings.
