Super Tight Junk Mattes problem
by Doug Sinclair on Jan 21, 2008 at 2:29:53 pm

Trying to use Aharon's technique for super tight junk mattes, and there's a problem.

My comp is 130 frames. When I do the auto-trace, it appears to work (ie. the info panel counts up from frame 0 to frame 130) just fine. But then when it creates the new layer, the solid only lasts the first 34 frames, and the mask doesn't move--it's just stuck at the outline for frame 0.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

I don't have AE open in front of me, so pardon the lack of precise AE lingo.

When you do an autotrace, AE asks you, "How do you want me to do it?":
Do you want me to autotrace just THIS frame?
Do you want me to autotrace ALL the frames?

The one you pick determines which kind of autotrace you get.

It's set to trace the full work area. And like I said, it goes through the full frame count in the info panel (Tracing frame 0, frame 1, frame 2, etc.) all the way up to the end of the comp.

But the new traced layer covers only a portion of the work area, and doesn't change from frame to frame.

Okay, well, when was the last time you shut down AE. rebooted your machine or shut it down completely? If it's been a while, try doing it in the order in which they appear above.

Sometimes the masks are so heavy that it will bog down AE making it only look as if there is a problem. I suggest you track matte a solid through the alpha of the auto traced layer. this will confirm your problem or reveal a solution.
