3d Lighting effect question

Hi i am quite new to AE and these forums, so I have a quick question or am asking for any suggestions to create an effect I am after.
I am using basic 3dstroke and starglow effect to create light streaks like the simple example I have posted below. What i am after would be to create a 3d looking logo and have the light streaks only light up the logo at the parts they are buzzing around until the end. Is it possible in AE or do I need to use 3ds for this effect? Any suggestions?

I'm not sure what you're after. Do you want the streaks to cast light on the 3D logo?
You could achieve this by duplicating logo layer, masking the upper one to reveal only the areas to be illuminated by the streaks and applying levels, glows etc a to the masked layer.

I dunno if this would work but the way i would try it would be to create a light and parent it to the light streak so it moves as it does, tweak it a bit and it should cast light over the logo as the streak moves.

Thanks for the advice, I kinda need it to cast light in 3d tho, so I think I might try to render some light animations in 3ds and then try to match them with the light streaks in AE, or maybe just do it all in 3ds. Anyone know any techniques to making something similar in 3ds?
