Hey,
I'm trying to create the effect of someone shooting through a wall and we see the bullet hole in a wooden wall. Something that looks realistic would be great, I have tried painting one in photoshop but I'm not much of and artist so the results are a little disapointiong. Remember in the first few minutes of Live Free or Die Hard the fight scene in the apartment, the guy is shooting around the room and we see bullet holes everywere that look photo-realistic. Maybe this has to be done with practical effects.

It doesn't have to be done with practical effects, but it will look much better if it is!
Even if squibs aren't an option, throwing some dust & debris around can do wonders for increasing the realism of a gunfight.
That said, you should look at reference footage closely to try and recreate this effect. Wood will splinter to some degree (so a shatter effect might help) it'll also throw some smaller pieces of wood into the air (so a particle system might help) and it will, of course, leave a mark on the surface (tracking a mark onto the surface with a corner pin might handle this).

Hi,
I had the same problem with bullet holes in a car door. Try Andrew Kramers Movie Essentials. Thats all you need. It helped me a lot and is availible for a good price.
