Magical Light Streaks...?

I'm looking for the fastest way to create some cool looking light streaks that twirl around an object.
I've tried Andrew Kramer's Light Streaks tutorial but I'm not getting the results I want.
I want it to look "magical" like some type of spell was casted on the object, transforming it to something else.
Any clues how to achieve this look?
P.S, I need something that works on a white background (which is why a lot of emitters on Particle Illusion just don't look good here).

FYI - for putting particles over a light BG in particleIllusion, there's a feature called "preserve color" which essentially adds a duplicate particle behind the partticle but it's black - at least that's my understanding of how it works - either way... it gets the job done.

My mistake. I haven't actually watched that tutorial, but I had assumed the "orbing" effect would be similar to the "orbing" effect from the TV series "Charmed" (which, from memory, involves a light streak wrapping around a person).
