Displacement map problem
by take2visualmedia on Dec 10, 2007 at 3:14:30 pm

I went through Aaron's great tutorial about displacement maps.

Layer 1 (bottom): Using fractal noise, I set up my moving gray tone similar to what Aaron uses in the tutorial.

Layer 2 (top): I then have a piece of video that I want to be "mapped". I set it up with the displacement effect, point the effect to my Layer 1 gray moving background and....nothing happens. No change, the video image looks like there is no effect on it. Am I missing something? It seems very straightforward yet here I am. Thanks.

I had this problem before, but Aharon points out in his tutorial that the displacement map effect ignores any effects placed on other layers. So in order to get it to recognize a fractal noise or color correction, you have to pre-compose the layer and make sure you choose to move all attributes INTO the new comp when that window pops up.

Anyway, that's what I was doing wrong, at least. Hope that helps!

I just had this issue. In the 2nd podcast, towards the middle, he explains what Julio is talking about.

If this is what you're doing, the fix is really simple.
