rendering out of CS3 with Prores 422?
by paulos on Nov 29, 2007 at 2:21:01 am

hey so

is prores 422 working as an option to render out of AE CS3? I did a search and saw that there was an issue with importing prores into AE, are there any known issues with rendering out to that codec?

it's a significant space saver over animation and wondered if people are using it successfully.

thanks

I just started a thread earlier today.

It was working very well for me today after I figured out how to render out to trillions:

http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/2/922047

Not only is it a space saver, but it's 10bit as opposed to Animation's 8bit.

hey Jeremy,

read the thread and repeated what you did and I can't get prores to render in trillions. just to make sure are you selecting trillions in the output module dialog?

thanks

Yes, are you on AE 8.0.1?

And you trashed your preferences?

That's weird man. I just did it on my laptop last night to make sure. After I trashed preferences (and emptied the trash) @ User > library > Preferences > Adobe > After Effects > 8.0 > Adobe After Effects 8.0 Prefs the trillions option shows up in AE. AE must be quit when you trash your prefs.

This may be a situation where you also need one of Apple's semi-fine products like FCP installed on your machine in order to gain full use of the codec.

Is that a possibility?

You 'can't' get ProRes without FCP.

That's a good call, though, even if you have the codec without FCP.

I can check that and get back.

Just checked, and no you don't need FC installed.

We have a freelancer working on some shots for us, and I would like him to render out using proRes. He doesn't have FCP 6. Is there a way I can get him the codec so he can render out of AE with it?

Nope.

Don't you just love how everyone is adopting a philosophy that proprietary codecs are best for making money, and users be damned?

Well, it is possible, but I don't know about the exact licensing and what you want to do is probably illegal. You should pay for a copy of FCS2 for your designer.

That being said, you can move codecs to other machines.

hey jeremy,

yes trashed those prefs in the path you supplied, restarted and still in the output module in render que tab/video output/ depth drop down menu....the only choice i have is millions.

I have FCP 6.0.1 installed.

It's very strange that we are seeing different results....there is something I am obviously not doing correctly.

Could it be your version of Quicktime? Isn't there a version 7.3?

Another good call. I am on the most up to date Tiger/Quicktime/FCP there is (all the updates were posted about two weeks ago) FCP 6.0.2, QT 7.3, OS 10.4.11. On a side note, FCP is much more stable @ 6.0.2 than 6.0.1 and I haven't seen any issues with QT7.3. Personally, i think the upgrade is worth it as long as your capture card drivers can support the latest update, but I can understand if you don't want to update.

That could be it I guess. I'm in the middle of a big project so can't afford a major upgrade.

would be good to find out if your process can be repeated on a FCP 6.0.1/7.2 system.

Just checked on a machine running FCP 5.1.4 10.4.9 and QT 7.1.6 and got the trillions option.

Hey Jeremy,
Great tip! And I can confirm that your method of deleting the preference file works for this. ProRes HQ is now showing trillions!
Thanks again,
Santiago

P.S. I'm running on Leopard with 6.0.2 and AE 8.0.1
