bumpy ground

i want to do a shot that involves bumpy ground. the only way i can describe it is if you can imagine a camera tracking through a trench. i just need the floor and the 2 sides. this bit i can do creating 3 stills, putting a "tile" effect on it and then lining them up in 3d space. the problem is i want the texture to look slightly realistic.....i.e. a bit bumpy. i know AE only works with flat layers but is there a light/bump effect that can be used to good effect? i've tried fractal noise but not really come up with anything satisfactory!

People will suggest using a displacement map, but there is a downside to it: as soon as you move in 3D space, your fakery will be revealed. the look you want is best done in a real 3D application.

You'll want something like Zaxwerks 3D Warps or Conoa 3D if you have to do this in AE.
