ive seen this technique around, where a layer is revealed in slices with a radial type of motion
i would think with a displacement map type of effect
what type of map and settings do you think
just saw it recently in this guys reel at around :27

Other than the fact that Displacement Mapping doesn't rotate selected parts of an image nor move them in 3D space, I'd say you've got it pegged.

ok its not displacement map, but its obviously using some sort of key to drive motion. has anyone ever used the technique i talked about in my first post. thanks again dave!

If AE were to be used, maybe Trapcode Echospace would do what you need?
