Paint speed

I am trying to use either the paint brush or eraser tool in AE to paint on over a period of time and what I am finding challenging is how to keep the speed constant during the entire drawing on period. What I am trying to do is trace a long and very detailed series of lines and while I am dragging my mouse around tracing them it is taking me much longer in some areas to trace than in others. This is showing up in the animation and is reflected whether I use any of the options in the paint tool menu (Write on, Constant, ect...)
I have even tried just using custom and andjusting the start and end keyframes but my mouse drawing speed is always reflected.
I know I could use mask/pen tool to accomplish a similair effect but I figure there has got to be a way to do this simple task with the paint tool?

In case anyone cares I did some further research and found the answer in the AE bible "Creating Motion GRFX with AE" by the Meyers.
"Whether you set the end keyframes manually or use the write on mode, the stroke itself will retain all the inherent timing nuances (speed ups and slow downs) or your hands movements".
Hopefully Adobe will correct this issue in future editions of AE if they havent already (I'm using 6.5).

One troublesome way would be to copy the stroke, paste it on a dummy layer - where it will become position keyframes. Copy the position keyframes and paste them on a mask and use the Stroke effect to animate. That will give you linear time.
You'd probably want to turn the mask into smooth bezier to get something closer to the bspline of Vector Paint.
