Help in exporting to Mpeg2 - 4:2:2
by Bluriie on Sep 12, 2007 at 6:08:17 pm

Hi! Thanks for your time. :)

I'm currently using AE 7 on PC, working on PAL 720x576, 25fps.
And have problems exporting to MPEG 2 - Chroma format 4:2:2

My render settings were: Output Module -> MPEG 2 -> Profile: 4:2:2
However upon export, Chroma format is 4:2:0
(Btw, does "Profile" mean the same as "Chroma format"?)

I researched other sites and realised that I need a capture card that supports the YUY2 4:2:2 format.

Is that true? Is there a plug-in I can download?
I'm so new to this.
Previously, I exported all files to QT, but for this job, client requested the above specifications.

Thank you so much.
Any help is greatly appreciated. :)

Standard Definition MPEG-2 profiles are 4:2:0. High-Definition MPEG-2 profiles allow for 4:2:2 profiles.

Profiles are not equivalent to chroma. Although you are right in that profiles are analogous to video sampling.

I believe that the settings may be querky.

What exactly were the specs that your client requested?

And you don't need to shoot at 4:2:2 to output to 4:2:2.

Hi Roland,
Thanks for your response.

Yes, I thought you need to shoot in 4:2:2 to export in similar setting. However my video is a mixed of stills and video.

Lets say (*just thinking aloud), if the entire video only uses stills/ photos, so how do you convert a still image animation(progressive) to a 4:2:2 format? Could it be something to do with the Compositon Settings instead of the Output Settings?

Btw, here's my output requirement:
MPEG2
720x576
PAL 25 fps
15 Mbps
4:2:2 chroma format
GOP 12
4/3 or 16/9

I managed to get all the settings in AE - MPEG2 correct, except for the chroma format setting. Couldn't find a section which allowed me to make the selection. (thought Profile 4:2:2 was the one, but its apparently not.)

Once again,
Thank you for your time :)
Regards,
April

Don't worry too much with color profiles. Just know that you can mix different color profiles within a single composition and render to a totally different color profile. If you like this sort of thing, then look into AE's color management tools, which is more useful to understand.

Are you outputting to an Alcorn-McBride device for playback of the MPEG-2? If you are then take note that I've managed to render to their specs. from within AE. Just give them what you have, perhaps even a 10-second segment to test.

BTW, how do you look at the profile settings for the MPEG-2 file after a render?
