A little animation number

So, a long time client would like me to create a little animation for his business phone number.
The number is: 444-8222. He'd like the 444 to morph into a little pac man type character to morph eat the 8222. Hence 444 ate 222.
Yeah, rim shot.
So, I was thinking about either creating the number in Photoshop, and then using some kinda warp effect to morph them into this pac man-like character
Or, I could create the 444 using a simple mask and then keyframing the mask into this simple creature. This would take a bit of time but would look fairly good in the end.

One way is to mask a "4" , and animate the mask so the hole becomes an eye, and the tail becomes the jaw. Sort of. Copy this three times for the "444". As the masks start to animate, the three "4s" slide together so you have one "4" which then becomes the character.

my $.02:
Personally, I'd do as Steve suggested but leave the 4s (characters) separate, having one eat each of the 2s. I think that that makes an even better mnemonic device, because the viewer will remember that the number of 4s is the same as the number of 2s.
