After Effects 6.5 - Import Error

Hi,
I keep getting the same error on AFX 6.5 on both my laptop and PC. It's usually - (45:35) could not parse file - when I try to import any file like a tif, jpeg or movie. I've tried deleting all preferences, unistalling and reinstalling with no luck, same error message. It's also having difficulty finding any files in the "all acceptable files" display.
I've deleted DivX player and codecs and running Quicktime 7.1 6 not 7.2

Either upgrade QT or downgrade it. Lots of issues with QT these last few installs. Best to stay ahead of the pack by being behind them when it comes to installing QT.
If the re-install doesn't cut it then it's obvious that something other than AE is doing all the damage here.
Good Luck!

yep, you can get a lot of probelms when you upgrade one piece of software that older software needs... if you can, determine which version of qt was recommended for ae6.5, download that version, uninstally the current version and install the old one.
if you are using another piece of software (say, fcp) that requires a later version of qt (but not quite as new as the version you are running) then try the minimum version for that software to see if that helps ae6.5.

Thanks for the tips on Quicktime, I've tried uninstalling and going back to older versions to no avail. Someone's told me to try a registry clean, which scares me a little. I guess if i back up all work the worst case scenario is having to install software again. I've trawled the net about this error and bar a couple of other postings I seem to be alone on this one. No solution yet.

if you wanted to make sure that there were no thirdparty quicktime components taht were creating a conflict goto library/quicktime and move all files those files to a folder on your desktop. then goto users/username/library/quicktime and move all those to another folder on you desktop.
leave the system/library/quicktime file alone (unless you know you've been putting codecs/components in that folder, then you'l' wan't to remove any that you've added).
then restart ae and try importing a troublesome file... if it works, then try re-introducing the components/codecs, until you find the bad ones. you can then try to find updates for those and re-install them if you need them.

You'll find QuickTime components in two areas - ProgramFiles>QuickTime and Windows>System32. There should be two QT-related files in the former folder. You can't miss them, they're named appropriately
Best to use the ControlPanel's Remove/Add Programs function to uninstall. Then dive into the two areas to ensure that there ar eno leftovers after their removal.
Then start off with a fresh install of QT. Lots of stories of QT leaving behind legacy files after an auto-removal process. So it's best to do a manual check.
And should that also fail, then you'll want to look into reinstalling DirectX.
