Question Regarding the "Creating Fire with Fractal Noise" Tutorial

Hi!
I have been driving myself crazy trying to complete the "Creating Fire with Fractal Noise" Tutorial created by Matt Dallos. Everything seems to be going well until I get to the step, "Hold ALT and double click on the flames composition. Change the thickness keyframe of flames at 4 seconds to 300 and change the second width keyframe to 1800." All I get after completing this step is a gray solid on top of my other layers. I guess my problem is that I am not sure what holding down ALT and double clicking on a composition is supposed to do. Therefore, I am not sure if I am completing this step properly. Obviously I am missing something. Thanks in advance for your help.

Alt+Double-Click on a nested composition opens it up in its own composition. It's a shortcut way of going from the main composition to a nested composition.
It doesn't create or move anything - just a quick way to navigate from one comp to another.

RoRK,
Thanks for the heads up regarding the ALT-double click command. However, I still can't figure out why I am getting a gray solid in front of my other layers after completing the 2 steps right after the ALT-double click.

Apologies for overlooking your post. I have a sense that you have not switched off the eyeball for this gray solid.
I've not done this tutorial but I'm quite certain that the grayscale layer/precomp is used as a displacement map. If so, it's visibility should be switched off.
If all this is true, then it is advisable that you look into working with a more structured learning experience with AE. It will be more rewarding in the long-run.
Take a look at the Meyer's books for a comprehensive, yet inexpensive option towards learning AE. That's where most of us started and many of us are still hooked on their books.

Roland,
Thanks for the suggestions. I will try to get ahold of the Meyer's books that you mentioned. I work at a Public Library, so I can probably get them through Interlibrary Loan. I will also try turning the visibility off on the gray solid layer. Thanks again!
