Importing problem

Hi
every time i try and import my video i get this error

"After Effects error: retrieving fram from video stream. (3) (53::34)"

This video was extracted from tape to dvd (dvd recorder), then to an avi file. the spec on the video file is

720x576(1.07).Separating(Lower
0:31:31:11, 25 fps
millions of colors
Xvid MPEG-4 Codec
44.100 kHz/ 16 bit? stereo

Xvid is bad.

Use another app to convert it to uncompressed AVI or a Quicktime format such as Photo=JPEG before importing into AE.

will i loose quality converting it to an uncompressed AVI
