Sound in 3d space

Hi all,
Here's what I want to do. I want to have a camera moving through a 3d space, such as a hallway, and the hallway walls are lined with video clips.
I could do that, but what I want to know is if you can embed sound in 3d space relative to the camera position, so as it flies past the video, the sound fades in and out again as it passes by.
The only way I know how to do this would be to 'fake' it with sound editing programs and just try and match the timing up.
So yeah, is there anyway to position audio in 3d space?

Although, now that I say that, you *might* be able to use expression where the sound is linked to a Null object, and based on how far away and which side of the camera it's on, it get's louder and pans.
You might want to post this in the AE expressions forum.

Even if there is such an expression, consider that for each sound source, you'd have to create a separate audio file for proper surround mixing.
Consider these points, too:
AE certainly isn't the best application going to create surround audio, so you'd end up in an audio application anyway.
And then, what if you didn't like the results from the audio files created in AE? You'd have to modify the expression in AE and recreate the audio files, with little guarantee that you'd like the results any better.
In this case, I think your first impulse was the proper choice. I'd go straight to an audio application. An audio application is designed to do the job properly. An application primarily concerned with video compositing probably isn't the best choice.

of course, you're absolutely right.
Still, you have to admit this would make a really interesting experiment. They do similar stuff in 3D where there is audio driven by the animation, and I'd love to see this in AE.

You could do this using expressions. I did something similar once, but it was pretty rudimentary. The proper way to do it would be to find the position relative to the camera, and the relative angle from the view so that you could alter the levels of the right and left channels independently. It is a little complicated to set up, but then it gives you your results automatically.
I'll try to re-hash my old expression with some new fangled techniques I didn't know at the time if you think that would be helpful.
