some wicked masking?

How do you suppose they did this? Masking by hand? Some kind of simulator? It just looks amazing.I'f I were to do it, I think I would probably take photos of different oils on a black bachground; or better yet, film them. I dunno though.

Thoughts?

My guess would be just film splattering ink and overlay it with various transfer modes. It could be done a number of ways but that would be the easiest.

Videotape ink squirting into a liquid - water most likely. I've done this before using ink and a glass of water. The trick is to get the water to not shake too much, which if you play that video back you'll see about 1/3 of the way through the water sways back and forth a little. Then overlay the clips with different transfer modes. Something better than a glass would be a fish tank so you'd not have rounded sides and highlights to deal with.

I am not convinced any of this started as analog material.

I do recognize a few Cycore effects here.

yeah, maybe not; but it seems like that would be the easiest way to go about it.

I agree, there is some effects applied that mirror and rotate it to enhance the effect, but I don't think it was computed generated.

I can't speak for this particular project, but over the years MK12 has been known to do a lot of ink in water. That's not a guess. I've emailed them about it.

Again, I can't speak for this particular project, but they are pretty skilled with mixing real world organics with digital.

Thanks, but that tutorial was not me. It was Creative Cow leader Andrew Kramer.
