Thoughts on muzzle flash

Looking for any advice on how to make this look better, feel free to say whatever you want about it, I just need some input, and yes I am going to get the red cap fixed on the end of the gun.

Muzzle flash "may" be just a touch too big.

I'd scale it down a little, but that's just my personal preference.

Otherwise, looking good.

I say a tutorial somewhere that also showed how to add a light flash effect to the shooter. i.e. the light from the flash of the barrel casting on the shooter.

That's one of the better muzzle flashes I've seen created in post in terms of execution. If you really want to get crazy you should look at reference material to see what a muzzle flash from a gun like that (but more... real) would look like.

If I have any advice it's to lower the smoke's opacity some, add a cartridge popping out the side of the gun (which could be as simple as a light solid masked and moving VERY quickly with motion blur on) and maybe look at adding a tiny bit of light flash on the shooter. There shouldn't be very much light flash on the shooter as your footage is in a bright environment already, it would have to be subtle to look 'real.'

andrew kramer's videocopilot has some good tuts on muzzle flashes, one steps thru adding lighting effects on the scene and subject as the flash occurs.
