importing Illustrator Paths/animating vector files

I would like to be able to import .eps & .ae files from Illustrator into After Effects to animate the vector images the way you can import Photoshop files as a Composition with different layers. How does one go about doing this?

Also is it possible to get Illustrator paths to read as After Effects Masks? I feel like The Adobe Suite should have these apps stream lined. Please let me know.

Yes. Import as Composition. (Check the help for more).

Yes. Select the paths in AI, copy. With AE open, select the solid onto which you want to make the mask, and Paste.Compound shapes make more than one mask (say, the letter "o").
