Unfold a map
by Flagpoint on Jun 21, 2007 at 3:25:19 pm

Dear users,

I need to make an animation of a citymap that unfolds (and than the camera zooms in to some locations). The second part is easy...But the part that the map unfolds...It's a huge citymap and it has 6 folds (or more) I think. My first idea: cut the map in different pieces, turn the layers in 3d and then use different rotations to unfold. But...is there a better way to do this? It takes a lot of time to cut the map in pieces and create a realistic 'unfold'. Second: the map needs a cover so that should fold with the rest..

Is there a little change someone can help me with this?

Hope to hear something. Thank you!

You'll have to cut it up (or mask it), move anchor points, and rotate. If you search the COW for "fold" or "airplane" you should find something.

Zaxwerks has a plugin that folds and rolls a layer, but it might not help you with so many folds. I've tried multiple cross-axis folds with it, and it might only work with a fair bit of precomping. Could be a pain, and you'd probably end up rotating layers anyway.
