"Plasma" help...recreating an effect (3 REF PICS ATTACHED)

Hello,
I am stumped and I have a client breathing down my neck :( I am looking for help on how to achieve this "plasma" fractal effect and animate it in After Effects. A plug-in, technique, etc. I already got suggestions for Particular, but it does not look like this (unless someone can point me to a tutorial). Here's the effect I am being asked to recreate (the client used it from stock photography for their print ad):
I have posted this in 4 forums and nobody has come close. Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, what you may wanna try is a few instances of advanced lightning, followed with a vector blur to make it look wishy washy...add a bit of a glow to it and you should be getting somewhere...

The lower two pictures are based on "strange attractors". There is a free plugin called AEFlame that can create a subset of this type of effect. Other than that you may try Ben's suggestions or my tips from a few days ago. In case of your radial spiky things, you should also consider builting one such spike/ beam and then clone it a bunch of times. If you use low opacity and Screen or Add blendmode, you could easily create something similar. Some kind of soft wobbly motion could then be introduced by displacement effects like Turbulent Displace.

Seeing as you're up against it and this artwork looks like it was create from many layered photoshop-ing...have you considered cheating. Check out the liquify effects and use it to animate these stills - You'll get your movement and won't have to worry about matching the look.
I've had a similar client request in the past and it's a headache because it's impossible to recreate someone else's artwork and then animate it.

its not impossible, it's just time consuming and therefore expensive. If they are breathing down your neck so you don't have time to do it carefully and the right way, give them the classic choice:

fractal noise set to a nice round bulbous setting and then set to "invert" gets webby inverted shapes like the bottom one. And yes it looks like a very smooth version of the strage attractors fractal.

Have you tried using "Wondertouch Particle Illusion"? There are some things in that program that you might be able to play with in AE to get the effect you are looking for..
