I created a character in Illustrator. I imported it into AE, with a camera i wanted to zoom close enough to see only his eye. Although once i do that the image is blurry and pixelated, even if the rasterize button is selected.

Okay, so I'm an Illustrator guy myself (spent a decade + drawing logos)... and I've seen this too. The easiest solution that I came up with was to enlarge the size of the art in the illustrator file. The continuous rasterization works well, but I found that there is a limit to it. In fact, I found that things rendered faster, and I was able to add effects to layers that AE would not when they were rasterized, by making the layers considerably larger, and loading that instead, and not rasterizing.
I have also found a difference depending on the type of AI file - like older versions (saved/exported as 8 and before) were essentialy EPS files, and all the newer versions are essentially PDF files. The rasterize button seems to do better on older versions. If you get another solution, let me know!

The easiest and correct way is to enable "continious rasterization" that will re-rasterize it every frame to its new size instead of just the first frame.
