1080i to 720p
by tenka1 on Dec 4, 2006 at 8:06:12 pm

I have a project i'm using some 1080i stock footage for and want to convert it to 720p format. What's the best method to deinterlace the footage and get the best quality out of the 1080i?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

The BEST way? In AE?

Get yourself a deinterlacing plugin like Twixtor or Magic Bullet. They look at the motion of the two fields and create a new, complete frame based on that motion. Because there are different varieties of motion, they use different algorithims to create new complete frames, and you have to select the one that most closely meets your situation. You can then simply drop the footage into a 720 comp, scale the footage to fit the comp, and you're good to render.

The cost: I'm going to take a guess and say $800+. Too rich for your blood? You could use AE's cost-free methods of deinterlacing. Do an advanced search in the AE forum, using the terms "deinterlace" or "deinterlacing", and you'll find the techniques. There's also a tutorial on deinterlacing footage... a couple of them, even.

Be warned: the freebie methods may create frames, but they also reduce vertical resolution by half. Take heart: the results aren't nearly as nasty as they sound.

So you can takes your choice and spends your money... or not.

Fieldskit is another option.
