Happy Thanksgiving; Light Sweep on Nissan Emblem
by tbmotion on Nov 22, 2006 at 8:32:23 pm

Hi Folks,

I've created a mock Nissan commercial with the chrome emblem at the end. I want to make that smooth light sweep that goes over part of the chrome emblem at the end, but am not satisfied with what I came up with. I've tried CC Light Sweep, and BCC Light Sweep.... maybe my settings are wrong, but it doesn't quite look the same. Any suggestions??

Looking at it, they modeled that in 3D and created a reflection map and a moving light source that your seeing reflected in the emblem. Then in composite stage they added a specular glow around the brighter elements (ie the moving light sorce) and they match moved a blue lens flare with an anamorphic streak over the light sorce (reflected in the emblem) then faded out the lens flare halfway through.

I'm sure it will play. But since I didn't compress it for web and make it progressive download I didn't want it to seem like the link doesn't work as it sits there for probably a good while.

But you are a dangerous man, Andrew. :)

so then,

thanks for the input. But, I've built this thing in Photoshop and AE; any suggestions on keeping it in AE with some kind of filters or something. I'll try something based on what you said.... DON"T FORGET THE CRANBERRY SAUCE!!!

Are you just doing this as an exercise because I just posted you the ACTUAL Nissan ending uncompressed so you can have the real thing.

I'm doing it as an exercise/spec piece for my reel.... awesome to get the actual footage though! THANKS. I still would like to get some tips/suggestions for achieving the effect as I am trying to learn more AE stuff.

You could add a beveled edge to the layer's alpha of the logo and then animate the position of the shadow with in the bevel, to try and match the light sweep motion. Adding a bevel onto the logo that already has one built in may look weird but if you could make the logo flat and then add a beveled edge in AE then it may look ok. Could also try a drop shadow and do the same with it's shadows position.
