how to?--circles spinning
by TroyHaz on Nov 10, 2006 at 7:33:32 pm

I'm trying to recreate an effect: curved solids spinning around a cyclinder; By way of example check out: http://www.markval.com and click News. You see this at the beginning of ESPN's Sportscenter intro and a less 3d version on the Golf Channel. I have no idea how to do this. I tried motion paths, and the CC cylinder effect, but to no avail. Any ideas? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

When I look at the animation you describe, I see work in a 3D application and not AE.

AE might have 3D capabilites, but they're better thought of as two-and-a-half-D: in other words, you can move 2D objects around in 3D space. If you're patient enough to construct a bunch of 2D planar objects into a 3D arrangement, you can then put them in a precomp move it around as 3D object, too.

But curved 3D objects with lighting and shading? That's asking more than AE can deliver, I think.

Definitely 3D, I agree with Dave.

Thanks for the info. At least I wasn't way off base when I couldn't figure out how to do it. :)
