You can't hear audio in AE just by hitting the space bar. It won't do it -- never has. AE isn't a editor, it's mainly a compositing application, and it works differently. You need to get used to that.
You can hear audio in one of four ways:
1) RAM preview
2) by hitting the period key on the numeric keypad (I think it defaults to playing 4 seconds of audio from the location of the timeline cursor, but you can change that length in preferences)
3) by scrubbing the audio (command-move timeline cursor on a mac, control-move timeline cursor on windows)
4) by holding down the command (mac) or control (win) key, then clicking and holding down the timeline cursor -- you'll hear something like the next 8 frames of audio. I think you adjust that in AE preferences, too.
And that is it.
And if this is your first day using AE....
I think you'd enjoy going to the After Effects Basics forum on the Creative Calf. If you do a detailed search there, you'd be surprised how much you'll find.
Chances are if that you're just getting started, the people who post there have the same questions you do. And if you have a new one, the chances are that they're also wondering about it. So you don't only help yourself, you help a lot of people.

Though the Calf is good, I think you should read the After Effects manual first. AE is a very complex application that does not reward people who just "jump in".
