it would depend on what kind of look you want for the fire. generally, you may want to use Fractal noise (Effects > Noise&Grain > Fractal noise) in creating fire, smoke and other organic partcles. For step by step instructions, go to tutorial link of this site and search using keywords like fire, smoke and the like.
