New After Effects Sticky with Common Questions
by Joel Hooton on Oct 5, 2006 at 10:00:51 pm

I don't know who exactly this should go to so I am sending it out to everyone. I have noticed that a lot of similar questions come up every week. How do you open a 7.0 file in 6.5? What is rotoscoping? Where are my Cycore FX? And so on. Would it be possible to have a Sticky at the Top of the page in Big BOLD letters that says, LOOK HERE FIRST FOR COMMON QUESTIONS RELATED TO THE BASIC FUNTIONS OF AE.
As this list grows the questions and links to previous posts can be made. It would just help eliminate a lot of the same posts every week by people who don't know any better.

I agree the the creative calf is for that and it does cover the basic stuff well. All I was sugesting was that there be a sticky that has the common questions. People who are new or lazy just post something without searching to see if it has been asked before. It was just a suggestion. All we need to do is organize the top 20 or so generic questions and put several links to post answers or tutorials. It would help out the new guys by giving a quick place to look for many common questions.
I would even be willing to take common questions, make the list and find the answers here at the COW. As long as it is determined to be of value to the community.

If you want to make the list, I'd be happy to make it a sticky post. There's no guarantees that people will look there before they barge in with the same question 2 posts down, but hey, maybe we'll get lucky.

Please List Common AE questions for beginners !!!
by Joel Hooton on Oct 6, 2006 at 12:50:44 am

Please respond to this post with several of the general or commonly asked questions. A list will be compiled and a sticky post added to the top of the forum.

Here are some quick examples of commonly asked questions

1. How do you open a AE 7.0 file in AE 6.5?
2. How do you cut out an actor from the background (rotoscoping)?
3. What is pixel aspect ratio?
4. Where are my Cycore FX?

And so on...

Thanks
Joel

Here are a few more you might want to add:

1.) How do I get that organic growing vines look you see all the time?
(Then link to Jayse's growing vines tutorial.)
2.) How do wiggle expressions work/how do you tie one to a slider?
3.) How do you loop a footage item?
4.) Why won't AE see all my RAM?
(Then link to Steve form Gridiron's post about how RAM is handled in AE)

Re: More FAQ

- I got error #3759 ... what does it mean and how can I fix it?

This one's difficult to answer, as I've never seen a comprehensive list of AE errors, and in fact, if such a list were made available, it may be meaningless to us users. So at best, our solution would contain general troubleshooting advice ... in addition to the solutions to those errors that we actually do know about.

I may be wrong ...

Thanks everyone. I will sort the various questions everyone has given me into different areas such as plugins, workflow, errors, tutorials, etc. The nI will start searching for the best several answers to each question.
