Can't paste motion paths into AFX....grrrr....

I have some paths in Photoshop & Illustrator that I want to paste into my AFX 7.0 project as motion paths.
I read up all the documentation I could find and even watched the Creative Cow podcast on this very issue - but it's not working for me.
After copying the path in Photoshop, I go into AFX, select "Position" on my layer and simply do an Edit > Paste - but instead of applying the path in the clipboard to a motion path, 2 regular masks are pasted instead. I've tried having the keyframes on & off, but both give me the same result. I've tried clearing my entire clipboard and restarting AFX 7, but no luck.
These paths aren't closed, but I experimented with closing the paths and then copying them into AFX, but I got the same result.
I think I'm following every manual, book, and online tutorial's instructions to the letter, but I can't get this to work. Any ideas?? Thanks!

I think i had a similar problem. You should use the Pen tool to draw your paths. When I used the paintbrush tool, i solved it selecting the path, choose object>path>outline stroke. It worked but the position duplicated and i had to erase one of them.

The key is you need to have the word "position" selected in the layer you want to go down the path. First have the path on your clipboard (from Illustrator or PS), select the layer and open up position. Then select word position and paste. It will come in as keyframes. If you don't select position, it will come in as a mask.

I have selected the word position - it's even highlighted, but still no luck.
My paths are fairply complex, so I don't want to do them by hand w/ the pen tool.

ok try the second option.
select the path in illustrator. Choose Object>Path>Outline Stroke
Then copy the path and paste it in the position layer of your object after having created a keyframe.
It should work fine like this.

Is it possible you have a renegade point somewhere? If you have more than one path that you're cutting and pasting it won't work, even if it's just one extra point that you inadvertently started. I just tried it with a fairly complex path and didn't have a problem. Make sure you click on the edge of the path you want as opposed to a drag selection.
