organic mask animation

Hey all,
I'm trying to work up an animation sequence which requires some very complex masking. The client would like us to 'grow' artworked plants on-screen. You may have seen this in the KissKissBangBang titles.
Whilst I'm no Kyle Cooper, I think this is easily possible in AE. I've been experimenting with using Trapcode 3D stroke placed in a track matte to reveal the artwork, and this works to a degree but it soon becomes so complicated that I think there is a far more elegant way to do this.
A very similar take on the organic treatment can be seen here revealing the inky swirls in Runs_House

These types of things are usually done with the "write-on" effect; you can set it so it reveals your layer, or do it on a solid, and trackmatte.
You can have multiple paths that are stroked sequentially etc.
I know there's some tutorials around here somewhere, one about plants, and one about animating a handwritten signature.
