i currently use trapcode shine in a lot of my projects but i've heard a lot about knoll light factory. is light factory worth getting if i currently use shine? are they direct competitors or does one do something that the other does not?
thanks for the help

Trapcode Shine create Rays of light. Knoll creates a variety of light FLARES.
I like them both. Check out their websites to visualize the difference. Both GREAT
tools when used tastefully.

Ha! I agree and admire your wording. They really are completely different tools, and both are easy to over-use.
Personally, I use Knoll Light Factory a lot more than Shine, and I went through a period of putting chroma-hoops in everything. I'm over that now... But it isn't one or the other. If you have a tight budget and can only afford one, then go for KLF because After Effects already has a few light burst plug-ins which aren't as fast or pretty as Shine, but do basically the same thing. However although AE also has a lens-flare plug-in, it's nothing compared to what KLF can do.

As much as I'd love Knoll Lens flare (or shine for the matter), I've found you can create pretty good lens flare using the basic ones available in AE and colouring them, stretching the layer, adding a distort etc...
It's probably not as good as KLF, but it is a lot cheaper :)
