I have a plastic 3d looking button, and i would like it to come into view as if it was emerging from a liquid or melting into view. It is on a white background. How would I be able to achieve this?

Actually 3D or just an illusion of 3D?

A serious bit of design since AE is not a procedural 3D animation/modeling system. REquires you to learn Mr Mercury, Blobbilize, Caustics and Wave World.

In WW, you will animate a rising floor made up of a grayscale image of your button. You will apply the compound effect of WW to a solid layer and either start tweaking Mr.Mercury or Caustics using surface layer controls only.

It's really hard the first twenty or thirty times and I know of no direct route to accomplish this effect.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: "For crying out loud, read the freakin' manual."

well i think just an illusion. Basically all i want to achieve is an effect of my button melting out of nothing into it's full view. Imagine a candy like button (apple's buttons are a good example) and have it morph from nothing. This could potentially look as if it's melting together into a solid, or as if it was sort of emerging from the white background.

Once again you should really use wave world and caustics. It's the most realistic looking simulation of this effect without going into 3rd party plug in realm. Look up some tutorials on those effects here and try it out. It will definitely pay off!
