Creating Fire/explosions without a plug in After effects 6.5

Can anyone out there guide me through creating realistic fire and or realistic explosions in After Effects 6.5 pro. Iknow there are many plugins that provide that look but I would really like to save my money.

well,
check out this explotion project under the resources section. It might get you started.
the project use 6.5 pro and a franctal noise.
