In this video tutorial, CreativeCOW leader Aharon Rabinowitz demonstrates a quick and easy way of creating that 'old tv look' -- complete with scan lines, interference and much more using Adobe After Effects without the use of expensive plug-ins. Please note: This tutorial is 15 minutes long and over 50 MB.

Nice tutorial. You can also add the "Wave Warp" effect with "smooth noise" selected as the wave type to add a sort of waviness to the image like the interference that is often seen over broadcast television. You can also animate the vertical value of the "Offset" effect to make the picture roll up and down like on some older tvs.

I'm using After Effects CS4 and I tried doing this. I got to the part where you make the shape of the TV screen with the mask going from a square to a circle. I got nothing like that. I rotated it and I got something that was half the original size in the middle and a really odd shape. I didn't rotate it and it's not quite the right shape. Any ideas on what else I should try?
