I know this has been asked before, but none of those solutions seem to work. I am completely new to after effects, I know I must just have a setting wrong somewhere but I can't figure it out and i've looked online a lot.

I import and image to a new project, then put it in a new composition, but I can't see anything.

Caps lock is off, wireframe is unchecked, and I have reinstalled.

I'd really appreciate any advice :) Thanks

P.S. Even if I make the composition background like bright green, and add nothing to it, the background still won't show in that viewer

Are you looking at a comp viewer for that composition, or perhaps a layer viewer, footage viewer, or locked comp viewer?

A screenshot showing your full UI will help us diagnose your problem.

Nothing is jumping out at me -- can you File > Collect Files, zip up AEP and the PNG and post the whole project?

Looks fine here. Must be something wacky going on...

I recommend you first reload the footage (right-click in the project panel, choose Reload Footage), and failing that, clear your caches with Edit > Purge > All Memory and Edit > Preferences > Media & Disk Cache > Empty Disk Cache.

None of that worked. Really can't see what's wrong. When I purged all memory, the image flashed on the viewer for a second and then back to black.

[dale cullis] "When I purged all memory, the image flashed on the viewer for a second and then back to black."

Well, that's really strange. You purged the disk cache, too?

Can you see other PNG files? Can you see that specific image if you convert it to another format (PSD or TIF) first?

Try this.

As Walter suggested, change the file to another image format. Then reset AE prefs. To restore default preference settings, hold Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS) while the application is starting.

Then start a brand new project, new comp, and see if you still have the problem.

Hope you get it figured out,
Reiner

Hi, yes I purged the cache, and i've tried it different formats. I reset the prefs, and then started a new project, and re-imported into a new comp, and still nothing shows up in the window?

I really can't see why this is happening

I just tries importing .mov aswell just to see if it would work, and it is just a black screen for that aswell

Are you able to see other image files? Does it appear that its a problem with just this image, or is there a systemic problem within AE of not seeing any images?

Hi, I can't see any images or videos. They're there, and flash up really quickly every so often if I change the zoom etc but then it is gone again

Hmmmm...

That might be pointing to something outside of AE. Maybe graphics card or something. Can you give your machine specs?

Hi Reiner,

I'll be honest I know nothing computer related really, I have a Dell studio laptop that's 2-3 years old. I don't know it's specs, but I save most things to external hard drive so it should have quite a bit free space. It handles things like premiere pro no trouble at all?

Hey there,

I know it's been a few months, but I'm having the exact same problem. Did you ever figure out a solution?

Hello Jessica,

no I didn't i'm afraid, I installed it on a friends laptop though and it worked perfectly.

I tried everything, and despite premiere pro and photoshop etc working perfectly on my laptop, after effects just wouldn't work, so I assume I don't have enough RAM, I only have 3GB, and I have plenty of memory. I am guessing it's down to my laptop not being able to handle it though :)

Thank you for the quick response. I was really hoping you had a magic cure!

I talked to Adobe today for over an hour and they confirmed that my RAM, graphics card, etc., are more than adequate. They only issue they could think of is that I'm running Windows Vista. I'm going to try upgrading to Windows 7 and see if that helps. I'll be sure to let you know either way.

Thanks again!

Hi Jessica & Dale
I stumbled upon your dilemma after a long search while trying to figure this same problem out that I too was experiencing on my Windows Vista 64 PC...eventually after a lot of unistalling and re-installing a tried updating my gpu (graphics card) driver and it was then that I got my comp window in after effects to work! Hope this helps;)
