Adobe After Effects CS4 rendering issues

i have a composition about 3 min long and when i go to render the whole thing it only renders one tiny part of the whole composition when i want it to render the whole thing...and once it gave me a message saying that i need to change my workspace or something like that...ANY help will be greatly appreciated
