Satellite zoom Effect

I have a 3d render of a planet, im going to create a Sat h.u.d and i want to zoom in on a particular area of the world, and keep going in until i get a birds eye view of a piece of action.

how are those kinds of zoom in effects achieved?

Use different zoom levels of sat-images, like from google-maps, and stitch them together. But for the love of [name your god here], I implore you, please don't just copy the videoCopilot earth-zoom tutorial found here like everyone else does: http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorial/earth_zoom
Learn from that but make something original!!!!
