I am wrapping up a stop motion project which we will composite in AE. It features both real set pieces taken in principal photography and stuff rendered in 3ds max.

However, there will be a lot of panning and dollying shots, and I was wondering if there was an AE/3ds max plugin that would allow me to conveniently track the shot and import this data into the 3ds max camera so I can render the 3ds max object in such a way that it meshes with the scene (e.g. when the camera turns, the 3ds-modeled tree matches the perspective in which it is in.

Sounds like you need The Foundry's camera tracker plug-in.

Is there any free alternative?

No, but you can rent the plugin for the duration of your project.

[Andreas Sizynski] "Is there any free alternative?"

There's the Voodoo Camera Tracker, which I have heard of but have never used. It's free and will export to 3ds Max, but of course does not have commercial support.

Boomerlabs.com has a plugin Max2AE. This will allow you to move camera Data back and forth between Max and AE. How you choose to trach the shot initially is up to you. i.e. boujou / PF track etc.

The higher they fly... the much.

Can you track via Mocha? I have done some tracking before, but I'm not sure how to approach that...

The new version of Mocha, that they announced last week, will do some kind of camera tracking but the current versions don't.

thats weird, I was fairly certain they do. Or am I just confusing camera tracking with Rotoscoping?

Until the very latest version Mocha only did rotoscoping and planar tracking. Planar tracking is very different from camera tracking.

The new mocha Pro v3 is available now and will export 3D Camera Solve data in FBX format for 3DS Max.

If you have registered mocha AE that is bundled with AE CS4-CS5.5, than you can upgrade to mocha Pro for reduced price.

Best,
Ross
