Is there any way to do this using Shape Layers? I'm trying to create a simple vegas-style marquee but the actual Vegas effect has a sort of built-in blur that I can't get rid of.

Help with either of these problems will be much appreciated

Make a comp-sized solid.
Use the various mask tools to make a mask to define your motion path.
Copy the mask, select a shape, and then paste into the shape's POSITION property. You'll get a 2-second animation of the path, whose timing you can adjust.
Copy this position animation, and paste it into the other shapes' position property.
Move the keyframes on each shape layer, staggering them as necessary so they follow one another.
