Hey there,
Just got called onto a music-video shoot to help out with the HPX170. The camera op has just bought the camera and knows the camera just as well as I do. Most of my experience with panasonic lies within 720/24p on the HVX200 and the Varicam. The HPX is new to me and the prospect that this project ultimately needs to be in PAL is even newer.
The director wants to shoot the film for PAL. I know that some models of the HPX170 can make the switch. I am pretty confident that this particular model doesn't have that capability considering I live in Los Angeles and those models are a special order.
Anyway, I need to know what I should let the camera op the best formats/modes to be shooting at to make this guys life easier in post.
Any idea what my best options for standard PAL, and slow motion would be? (given that we are going to be shooting in NTSC, on the HPX170.)

Then in all honesty, if you can't get a hold of a 50Hz capable camera, shoot and post in 24pN. You can then make a hardware converted 25p master as they very last step.

I assumed that yes this was 60Hz camera. Now that you are bringing light to this, I have a new question.
Would the fact that it is a 60Hz camera eliminate the possibility of be able to shoot at 25p? Or can you shoot 25p on a 60Hz camera as well?
I thought that I saw the camera did have the ability to shoot 25p, so maybe this is a 50Hz?
So I guess what I am asking is, can you only EXCLUSIVELY shoot 25p with a 50Hz?

That NTSC HPX170 can be sent to Panasonic service and for $500.00, they will make it able to be switched to 50Hz formats. That would be the easy and smart way to do this.

I just looked at the camera and it cannot shoot at 25 p so I will have to shoot this at 24pN. Any suggestions about the slow motion if this is ultimately going to be converted to PAL?
I'm shooting this today which is why I can't get a differnt camera or send it to panasonic for the switch.

SHoot 60 over 24pN. Your QT movies will playback at 24pN so it will be just like the rest of the normal motion. Put the camera in 24pN mode, then change the frame rate from default to 60 (or whatever increment you want).

Yes, I guess a bit late for the Panasonic modification.
You will be fine converting in post, it is just time consuming and tedious and you will not be able to check the final output for flickering that may not be apparent on the computer's RGB monitor, unless you have access to a 50Hz capable monitor.
Watch out for discharge (ballasted) lamps or video displays in shot.
