First time spanning cards
by Scott Evans on Jun 29, 2009 at 11:50:46 pm

I just shot my first footage in HD with my 170, while recording the lightning footage the camera switched from card 1 to card 2. Now...when I ingest card 1 with my laptop and using P2 Viewer I do what I have normally done. I then ingest card 2 and all is fine. However when I try to view the footage there is one clip marked with a magenta exclamation mark and I dont believe all the clip is there. What did I do wrong? What am I missing regarding ingesting two cards with spanned clips?
Thank you.

You should mount both cards in log and tranfer and FCP will join the spanned clips.

Ummm...well thanks Jeremy...however I am using P2 Viewer, a Vista laptop and ultimately edited with PremierProCS4.
Therefore, that wont help me.

OK, thanks for the clarification. Do you have both cards loaded in P2 Viewer?

Only one slot for reading P2 on my laptop.

So move the p2 cards to another drive. The probelm here is that the warning is telling you you are missing the second half of the spanned clip.

Same question here but using Final cut.

"So, move the card to a drive." How should the folders be structured?

I'm using a RAID. Is there a way to do this without have multiple versions of the same media stored?

[joe picard] "I'm using a RAID. Is there a way to do this without have multiple versions of the same media stored?"

You could use MXF4mac to edit the MXF files natively, no log and transfer. Don't ever trash your MXF files. You can watch a primer here:

Otherwise, you need to log and transfer from your backup drive to your RAID.

Shane goes over that process here:
