Back to P2 Card
by John Paluzzi on Aug 21, 2008 at 2:53:54 am

Has anyone had any luck taking an offloaded P2 folder from a hard drive and writing it back to P2 card in its original P2 structure?

Hey Steve,

I have tried unsuccessfully with Raylight...can you tell me the steps to export it. I'm not looking to export Quicktimes back to P2 from FCP, I'm wanting to send my archived P2 offloads back to the P2 card. Thanks.

What have you tried and what kind of system and peripherals do you have?

I have tried just about everything. I don't seem to have permisions to write to the P2 card from the MBP. I basically have 3 offloaded P2 cards on an external hard drive. I want to put those files back on P2 cards so I can play them in my P2 Mobile. The files are still in their original P2 wrapper on the hard drive, I just want to transfer them back to P2 card. I'm using a MBP with latest updates, Duel adapter for P2 transfer.

I have done this through an HVX200, but the camera HAD to be connected though USB. Can you do that on you p2 mobile (connect though USB)?

Yes, you can on the P2 Mobile, but the drive has to be formated by the P2 Mobile, so it doesn't work for what I need.

I finally figured it out tonight (and with the help of Panasonic!) P2 Viewer, a PC software from Panasonic, allows you to do transfer from the drive back to P2. What I had to do was format an empty drive in FAT 32, copy the cards from my MAC formatted drive to the FAT 32 drive, load them into P2 Viewer on my Alienware laptop, and make the transfer that way. Total pain in the ass, but I got it to work! I'm still going to push Panasonic to make a P2 Viewer version for MAC. Thanks for your help!

You can also change the '1394 device' to USB device and mount the p2 on a mac.
You can then copy whatever you like onto the card without any permission issues.

Can you please post the exact instructions on how to do that? Thanks.

Hello,

for HVX200A (uncertain if there any diff. with hvx200):

1. Menu -> PC mode -> USB device

2. Connect HVX to MAC via USB and mount the p2.

3. Copy files from hd to p2 - Note that I had the original folder tree/structure
as originally copied from the P2 to the drive. I doubt it would work if one just
dropped random mxf files on the P2 without the proper folder structure.

The files copy and play back fine, unlike via firewire which reports that the p2 cannot be modified.

Somewhat tangential to this - I noticed some posts re: one needing Raylight to play
back MXF files. I have had no problems dropping the mxf files on QT Player which plays
them back just fine.

Now my questions is...when you offloaded the original P2 files, did you do it by connecting the camera directly to an HDD that was formatted by the camera?
