HVX 200A doesn't mount

I'm on a quad G5 running Tiger. I just unpacked at Panasonic HVX200A. I have read as much as I can find and read a number of posts but don't find my particular problem.
The camera with P2 card installed will not consistently mount via firewire and when it does it sometimes either doesn't show any files under the drive icon or the mac shows error that "this file is unreadable by this computer."
The latest Panasonic drivers are installed and permissions are updated. I've even had an issue where the "log and transfer" option in FCP, when launch causes FC to crash over and again.
Anybody had these issues? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
