Problem with P2 Footage & FCP (1920 becomes 1280) WHY?
by Ryan Domis HD on Feb 19, 2007 at 10:39:00 pm

Within the first two weeks That I owned my camera, I was able to upload my footage into 1920x1080. 2 months go by, and I thought everything was being uploaded smoothly. Now, for some reason (Even when I record in 1080 24/24pA/30/60) Everything in 1080i/p gets compressed down to 1280x1080. What's happening? Everything in 720p gets compressed down to 960x720. Yes...I changed all of my settings to the easy set up for DVCPROHD(1080/24pA). I even Tried DVCPROHD(1080/60i). Here is the VERY WIERD PART....

I have some old files from when everything worked correctly. These files show up as 1920x1080 in the Mac Window...then when I drag it to final cut, the files in the window say 1280x1080. Is final cut lying or misreading my image sizes? Is there something in the preferences I might have messed with accidentally? Is there anyone who's had the same problem?

..everything in 1080 gets compressed to 1280x720. the 720p gets compressed down to 960x720. I've tried changing my settings And I've even tried to reque some footage that was shot in 1080. Whats the deal!? Some help would be great!

DVPCRO HD footage is ANAMORPHIC. 720p is 960x720, not 1280x720, and 1080i is 1280x1080, not 1920x1080. This is normal. FCP unsqueezes it when you edit. And...Quicktime knows it is anamporphic and plays it back full screen.

All is normal.

This feature is a pain in the but and I have to do an extra step. I do a lot of work with this footage in Shake and that program brings in a squashed image. Everythign renders and wors just fine but the last project I did was to Roto Scope a Tennis ball. I had to squash my spline to make it work. But when I export the footage in FCP and select it as 1280 x 720 16:9 it comes out in QT player as 1248 x 702. I wonder why that is?

I think I know what you mean but there still seems to be something that doesn't make sense....

All of my files imported before November that were shot in 1080 will show up as 1920x1080 in my finder window. If i go to "get info" It says (Dimensions 1920x1080. Codecs (DVCPRO HD (1080i60) When they are loaded into final cut...they say 1280x1080.

All of my files imported after November that were shot in 1080 will show up as 1280x1080 in my finding window. Why does the old 1080 footage show up as 1920x1080 in my finding window if the files after november show up as 1280x1080? Why is it reading the old files as 120x1080?

It must be difficult to understand because this is a very complicated situation. Let me see if I can break it down easier.

1080/24p footage shot before November:
Shows up as 1920x1080 in my finder Window on my mac desktop.
when imported...final cut reads it as 1280x1080.

1080/24p footage shot AFTER November:
Shows up as 1280x1080 in my finder window on my mac desktop. (INSTEAD OF 1920x1080)

If my camera only shoots in 1280x1080...why is it reading the old as 1920x1080?

The Bigger question..is why did it change in the first place? What happened to my 1920x1080?

Thank you for your help!

i have seen similar 'problems' like you have described. did you resolve why footage has changed its dimensions from 1920 to 1280? is it import settings?
