59.94 fcp preset wont play footage, but 29.97 will....why?
by Bob Flood on Jul 26, 2006 at 2:18:03 pm

hi all

shot a job on the p2 camcorder at 720p. I am using FCP 5.1 on a PPC g5, and when i drop the footage on a 720p 59.94 sequence it wont play, BUT if i change the sequence timebase to 29.97, the stuff plays great

i am confused... is the footage (for arguments sake lets use round numbers) 30 single frames per second (no fields, but every 1/30th of a second is a complete frame) or is it 60 fps (no fields but every 1/60 of s second is a full frame)

any help would be great

At what frame rate was the footage shot? If it was shot 720p30, then that all makes sense.

thanx! yes it was shot 30p "native" (i just found out about the difference between 30p over 60 and 30p native)

however the timcode on the source footage goes up to 59 frames. waht kind of issues is this gonna cause, anmd how do i deal with those said issues

yeah

this is one of the issues that has cropped up with the HVX 60p footage has the timebase at 60, while 24pN footage has a timebase of 24, so sometimes mixing footage from multiple sources ( say firestore and P2 cards) can cause issues in post when people not paying attention.

you can use the AUX timecode function in FCP to see both.

Set your capture window correctly to 29.97 before you import and the TC should be fine. Set the sequence window to 29.97 and it will be correct.

Best,
