A little confused here.

We have no problem importing footage into FCP directly from the p2 card.

Once I have imported, however, do I reformat, or just delete?

When try to drag ALL the contents of the p2 card to the trash, I get the warning that they are locked.

Is the proper procedure to drag everything BUT the txt file to the trash and delete using the option key, or just the contents of the contents folder to trash, and then option delete.

Or better, which folders or files to I preserve, and which do I delete?

thanks.

David S.

Select the LASTCLIP file and GET INFO. Unlock it.

Now trash it and the CONTENTS folder. Then OPTION-Empty Trash. That should do it.

OR...

Reformat the card. You can do that in the camera quite easily.

Is it easy/possible to format the card in-camera while shooting (continuosly)?

You cannot erase the card while still recording. You have to be in the camera menu to do the erase, so you have to stop recording.

So does laptop-dumping & -formatting go so quickly in real world that you can shoot continuosly even with 100Mbps?

We did an hour-long roundtable discussion for an infomercial, using two 4GB cards per camera. This is pretty much the worst-case nightmare scenario. And yes, it went plenty fast enough to keep up with the discussion. We used 720/24pN mode, so 10 minutes per card, that gave me time to pull the full card, offload it, use the P2 Viewer to verify the clips, and start the system copying a second/duplicate backup copy of the footage, then format the card in the laptop and have it ready to go for the next swap.

And you did all this while operating the camera at the same time?
Wow, this workflow needs quite a bit multitalent...

So with 1080p your workflow wouldn't have succeeded?

I wasn't the operator. We had plenty of people on set.

1080 would have been a challenge. I don't know that I would want to undertake a situation like this using just two 4gb cards when shooting 1080! In just a few weeks the FireStore should come out and minimize the worries about short recording times.

But even so, it worked. We shot for an hour on two cameras, 720/24pN, using two cards per camera with one spare. Worked just fine.

Making virtual p2 cards copies on my external hard drive is a common work flow. Once I've finish with a project I delete the p2 folder. All of a sudden files are coming up locked throughout the Content folder. Anyone have an explanation for this sudden occurrence? (OS 10.6)

They have ALWAYS been locked. To prevent accidental deletion. All you need to do to solve this is hold down the OPTION key while emptying the trash. That ignores the locks.

Really, you trash the P2 backups when done? Did you used to throw out all your tapes when done? Seems silly.
