 | HARD DRIVE Support: This is huge
by Luis Caffesse on Apr 18, 2005 at 4:57:08 am |
Noah has just reported on DVXUser that the camera will record to ANY hard drive which can handle the 100mb/s datarate. This means it does not need to be a firestore or other third party device.
Wow.
He also said engineers at Panasonic used the camera with an Ipod.
How's that for cool?
I've got a page where I"m listing all the news I'm getting, along with links and pictures:

If this proves to be true, and isn't limited by some technical gotcha to a small number of particular "compatible" Firewire harddrives, then yes: This is w-a-y cool. And long overdue! Woo-hoo!
Now, the next question is if the AG-HVX200 also supports _uncompressed_ digital data streaming out the FW port, similar to what the ReelStream folks are doing? I'm thinking this would be too good to be true, but hey ...
All the best,
- Peter
Just a friendly reminder to all: Please consider filling-in your COW user profile information so we have a better idea who you are, where you're from, and so forth. It's the friendly thing to do. Thanks!

Yeah, chalk that one up to 'too good to be true' Peter.
Speaking of Reel Stream, I just received an email update from them saying that the new and final version of the andromeda upgrade is now completely inside of the DVX. The only change to the camera is the addition of a USB port on the left side.
Amazing.

Firewire does not have enough bandwidth to uncompressed HD.
Losless compression through fw800 might be nice...
Or visually losless 12bit 4:4:4 linear gamma RAW...

I really hope those folks over at ReelStream will tap into the AG-HVX200 for uncompressed 4:4:4. I've been waiting for this for a long time already... Looks like I'll be waiting for a lot longer....
The camera won't ship until November! After that I still have to wait for the mod........... Maybe sometime next year?

That does it: forget P2 at $2000 for 8GB, I'm taking an iPod at $400 for 60 GB! I was thinking earlier today this had to be possible, and here we are ...
I'm sure P2 has its advantages, and down the road 2-3 years, maybe it'll fit into my workflow, but I think the iPod makes this the real magic bullet for using this camera affordably in HD modes for indies.

Maybe your iPods are more stable than mine (although I have to admit my ipods have taken quite a few spills) but the small drives are not the most rugged of devices. Of course this is still great news!! And Im sure there will be other devices that will handle capturing better than an iPod.
Oh and hopefully the firewire cable will have some way to stay securely fastened. Because if its a 4 pin connector like on the DVX, i wouldn't feel very confident about having the cable stay put.
Oh and Doug, the likelihood of an uncompressed data stream coming out of the firewire port is slim to nonexistent. But that is something that could possibly be changed by a firmware hack... whos ready to break their new $6,000 camera??

I think you will find that the iPod is probably only good for DV. I doubt laptop hard drives can be fast enough for DVCPRO HD. Nice try, though. Can anybody else be more technically specific than me? Im pretty sure this is the case.
Still, it is major news, even if we have to wear a full size FW drive on our body. I'd do it in a second for DVCPRO HD at $6000. In a heartbeat. Are you kidding?

You can thank Noah, he's the one having all the fun but taking the time out to keep us all up to date.
And for the record, I'm not all that funky.

Ah, spending more time at Starbucks and less at Ruta Maya, Luis? I figured you for a South Austin guy. ;-)

Funny that you say that.
I was only kidding about the 'funky' comment...
but I actually do live up north, right off 183 & 360, by the arboretum.
So, I hate to admit it, starbucks is a hell of a lot closer to me than Ruta Maya. But, I'm glad to say I spend a lot more time down at Dolce Vita (if you've ever been there) than I do at starbucks (not that there's anything wrong with starbucks)
Actually, I just met up with Mike Curtis (http://www.hdforindies.com) the other day, and we met at the new Whole Foods, which has been making the news for being an amusment park of grocery stores. I thought that was a fitting place to go for lunch.
Yeah, there are a lot of austinites here, aren't there?

All you bloody Austinites are making me homesick. Been working in NYC for almost 10 years, but miss my old hometown often. Would love to go back if I could- take a nostalgic walk down 6th street and put my head together with Luis, Mike Curtis from hdforindies, com, and all the other great Texas gods of geekdom.
I'm hoping Austin takes up its rightful place soon, so I don't have to keep living in just NYC and LA for film and tv work.
